Prayers for Facilitating Marriage
It is entirely acceptable for a Muslim to pray for the facilitation of their marriage. Although there are no specific hadiths from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) exclusively focused on marriage prayers, individuals are free to express their needs and desires through their supplications to Allah. Below are some suggested prayers:
- O Allah, make marriage easy for me and grant me a righteous spouse, with whom I can find happiness and peace, and who brings solace to my soul.
- O Allah, grant me a virtuous partner who will help me navigate the challenges of life and draw me closer to You through acts of obedience.
- O Allah, hasten my union with a righteous spouse and bless me with good and pious offspring, for You are indeed generous, responsive, and All-Hearing to prayers.
- O Allah, I beseech You by Your Most Sacred Name, the One to whom anyone who calls upon You is answered, that You bless me with marriage, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of Glory and Honor.
- O Allah, You are the guide for the lost, the hope of those who seek, the remover of worries, and the reliever of distress. Grant us marriage and provide us with Your lawful provisions, O Generous One, Lord of the Majestic Throne. Have mercy upon us with Your mercy, O Most Merciful, for I ask You by Your all-knowing nature—You who are aware of my condition—to bless me with a righteous husband whom I can lean on, and who finds comfort in me as well.
- O Allah, I wish to marry; therefore, grant me a man who is chaste and protective over my soul and belongings, one who possesses abundant provision and is abundantly blessed. Bestow upon us righteous offspring who encompass good character in life and in death.
- O Allah, forgive my sins, guard my chastity, and purify my heart. Grant me a spouse who is good for me, just as I can be good for him, in our religious and worldly affairs and in the outcomes of our lives, both immediate and long-term.
- O Allah, I seek refuge with You from delays in marriage and ask You to bless me with better than I deserve and hope for. Make me and my family content with him, and enable him and his family to accept me.
Recommended Supplications
There are several recommended supplications derived from the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which Muslims are encouraged to recite:
- The prayer reported by Anas, stating: “The most frequent supplication of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was, ‘O Allah, grant us good in this life and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.’
- The supplication taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) for someone who asked how to pray: “Say: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy upon me, grant me health, and provide for me, for these encompass your worldly and spiritual needs.”
- As narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed: “O Allah, rectify my religion, which is my source of safety; rectify my worldly affairs, wherein I make a living; rectify my afterlife, which is my return; and let life be an increase for me in every good, and let death be a relief for me from every evil.”
Conditions of Supplication
Supplication has certain conditions that must be fulfilled, including:
- Sincerity in one’s prayer, directing the supplication solely to Allah without associating anyone else or seeking intermediaries, as all hope for response and reward lies with Allah Alone.
- Trust in Allah’s capabilities, holding the conviction that one’s supplication will be accepted, as Allah (Exalted be He) has power over all things. As He states in the Qur’an: “Indeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is but that We say to it, ‘Be,’ and it is,” reminding us that Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise, aware of what is truly beneficial for us.
- Attending to the heart in humility during supplication, as Allah has praised Zakariya and his family, saying: “And [mention] Zachariah, when he called to his Lord, ‘My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors.’ So We responded to him and gave to him Yahya, and amended for him his wife.” They were quick to do good and called upon Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humble.”
Etiquette of Supplication
There are etiquettes that Muslims should observe when engaging in supplication, including:
- Begin the supplication by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), and conclude the prayer in this manner as well.
- Face the Qibla while making the supplication.
- Avoid invoking harm upon oneself, one’s family, possessions, or children. As narrated by Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): “Do not invoke harm upon yourselves, nor upon your children, nor upon your possessions; lest you coincide with a moment where Allah is asked for something and responds to you.”
- Maintain a moderate volume while supplicating, balancing between whispering and raising one’s voice, as Allah said: “Invoke your Lord with humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.”
- Persistently pray to Allah, which means being earnest and devoted, and approach Allah through the appropriate means of intercession.
