Sultan Abdulmejid II
Sultan Abdulmejid II is recognized as the last of the Ottoman sultans, taking the throne following Sultan Mehmed VI Vahideddin. His reign lasted from 1922 to 1924. The conclusion of his rule marked the end of the Ottoman caliphate and the rise of modern Turkey, a transformation that ensued after the conclusion of World War I.
During Abdulmejid II’s reign, the Ottoman Empire was in a state of decline and turmoil, surrounded by numerous adversaries. Faced with increasing dangers that he was unable to combat effectively, Abdulmejid II experienced exile from the country. This backdrop facilitated the ascent of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as the leader of the newly established Turkish state, following the official abolition of the Ottoman caliphate.
