Hadiths on Good Companionship

Hadiths on Choosing a Good Companion

The prophetic tradition contains numerous references emphasizing the importance of selecting a righteous companion while highlighting their qualities, as well as cautioning against poor companionship. Below are some notable examples:

  • The Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him- said: “Indeed, there are angels who roam the streets seeking those engaged in the remembrance of Allah. When they find a group remembering Allah, they call out: ‘Come to your need!’ They surround them with their wings until they reach the lowest heaven. Then, their Lord, who knows better than them, asks, ‘What are My servants saying?’ They reply: ‘They are glorifying You, magnifying You, praising You, and exalting You.’
  • The Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him- stated: “The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of one who carries musk and one who blows on a furnace. The musk carrier might give you some or you may buy from him, or at the very least, you will notice a pleasant scent. On the other hand, the one who blows on the furnace may either burn your clothes or you may find an unpleasant odor.”
  • The Prophet -peace be upon him- said: “A person is upon the way of his close friend, so let each one of you look at whom he befriends.”
  • The Prophet -peace be upon him- advised: “Do not associate except with a believer, and let no one eat your food except one who is devout.”
  • The Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him- remarked: “The best of companions in the sight of Allah is the one who is best to his companion, and the best of neighbors in the sight of Allah is the one who is best to his neighbor.”

Quranic Verses on Good Companionship

The Holy Quran presents several verses that encourage maintaining good companionship and warn against the dangers of bad friends. Here are a few significant verses:

  • Allah -the Exalted- says: “The close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous.”
  • Allah -the Exalted- states: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.”
  • Allah -the Exalted- advises: “And be patient with those who invoke their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance, and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the adornment of worldly life. And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desires and whose affair is [in] excess.”
  • Allah -the Exalted- warns: “And the Day the wrongdoer will bite his hands, he will say, ‘Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.’ Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend. He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.”
  • Allah -the Exalted- reminds: “By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.”
  • Allah -the Exalted- says: “And the believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those are the ones whom Allah will have mercy upon. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.”

The Relationship Between the Prophet and Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq

The prophetic biography serves as a prime example of good companionship, particularly the friendship between the Prophet -peace be upon him- and Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq -may Allah be pleased with him-. Abu Bakr was a devoted supporter who believed in all that the Prophet conveyed and was his companion during the migration.

This bond is illustrated in the Quran, where Allah -the Exalted- states: “If you do not support him, Allah has already supported him when those who disbelieved drove him out, as one of two when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.’ And Allah sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah, that is, the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” This verse highlights Abu Bakr’s close companionship with the Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him-.
