Regulations of Winter
Winter carries with it a number of rules, etiquettes, and traditions that every Muslim should observe to achieve excellence in worship and earn rewards and blessings. Additionally, these practices serve as an emulation of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Wiping Over the Khuffs
Understanding the rules regarding wiping over khuffs (leather socks) is particularly essential during the winter months. Among these rules is the requirement that the khuff must be pure, and it should be worn after achieving ritual purity. The process of wiping involves moistening the hands and then wiping over the tops of the khuffs, starting from the toes and moving up to the calf. It is important not to wipe the bottoms or the heels of the khuffs. The duration for which one can wipe is one day and night for residents, and three days and nights for travelers. The period is counted from the first instance when wiping occurs after achieving a state of ritual impurity.
Combining Prayers Due to Rain
The scholars hold differing opinions regarding the combination of prayers due to rain. The majority allow the combining of the Maghrib and Isha prayers because of rain, snow, or cold that dampens clothing. However, concerning the combination of Dhuhr and Asr prayers due to rain, the Maliki and Hanbali schools do not permit it. Al-Khurasani, a Maliki scholar, stated: “The combining of prayers due to rain is specifically for Maghrib and Isha, while there is generally no hardship in performing Dhuhr and Asr separately.” On the other hand, the Shafi’i school permits the combination of Dhuhr and Asr prayers, with the Malikis requiring a congregation for the combination to be valid, whereas the Hanbalis allow it for both congregation and individuals alike.
The Ruling on Tayammum in Severe Cold
Tayammum (dry ablution) is permissible in severe cold when hot water is unavailable, and one cannot perform ablution with cold water. This ruling is supported by the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) endorsement of Amr ibn Al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) when he performed tayammum in extreme cold. However, tayammum is not permissible in severe cold if one has the means to heat water or when tools are available to warm the water.
