The Last Chapter of the Quran

Final Surah of the Quran

Surah Al-Nas stands as the final chapter in the Holy Quran according to the arrangement of the Surahs in the Mushaf, rather than the order of their revelation. It is known that the Quran comprises a total of 114 Surahs, with 87 being Makki and 27 Madani. Surah Al-Nas is classified as one of the Madani Surahs. Scholars have suggested that its name stems from the repeated mention of the word “Nas” (people) five times throughout the Surah. Notably, it is one of five Surahs that begin with the phrase “Say.” The primary aim of this Surah is to guide humanity toward the path of seeking refuge in the true God from the evils of creation.

Benefits of Surah Al-Nas

Surah Al-Nas offers numerous profound benefits that every Muslim should reflect upon. Among its most significant advantages are:

Affirmation of Lordship

A careful reader of Surah Al-Nas will notice a strong emphasis on the concept of Lordship, highlighting that Allah is the Lord of everything and that all of creation is His servant, fully under His dominion. Consequently, the necessity of seeking refuge in Allah alone from the evils of Satan, his deceit, and whispers is reiterated throughout the Surah. Allah states, “And if an evil whisper comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.” Seeking refuge can occur in various situations, such as when starting to recite the Quran or during moments of anger, among others.

Recitation for Healing

It is highly recommended for Muslims to recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah Al-Nas, often referred to as the “Mu’awwidhatayn,” alongside Surah Al-Ikhlas every morning and evening three times. These Surahs are also recited over the ill and those affected by sorcery with the intention of healing and protection, especially at bedtime. A well-known hadith from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) describes how the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would recite the Mu’awwidhatayn upon himself when he felt unwell. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised Uqbah bin Amir to persist in reciting them, stating, “Never has anyone sought protection by anything better than these two.” Scholars have placed significant emphasis on Surah Al-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq due to their great benefits and the profound need for their recitation, especially in warding off harmful sorcery, the evil eye, and other malevolent forces. Ibn Al-Qayyim noted that the need for these Surahs surpasses the need for food and drink.
