Herbs for Kidney Stone Relief

Basil

Basil, known scientifically as Ocimum basilicum, contains compounds that help stabilize uric acid levels, thus making the formation of kidney stones less likely. Additionally, this herb is rich in acetic acid, which aids in dissolving existing stones. It is recommended to consume one teaspoon of basil extract or juice daily to harness its benefits.

Dandelion Root

The root of the dandelion plant, scientifically referred to as Taraxacum officinale, acts as a kidney stimulant and promotes bile production, which is believed to assist in waste removal and enhance urine output while also improving digestion. To benefit from these properties, fresh dandelion root can be juiced, or dandelion tea can be consumed—approximately three to four cups per day. However, people who are on blood thinners, antibiotics, antacids, or diuretics should avoid consuming dandelion tea or juice, as it may cause discomfort for some individuals.

Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass, or Triticum aestivum, contains compounds that increase urine production, facilitating the easy passage of stones and reducing the risk of their formation. Furthermore, it is packed with antioxidants that help eliminate salts and minerals from the urinary tract.

Horsetail

Horsetail, scientifically known as Equisetum arvense, possesses antibacterial and antioxidant properties that contribute to the overall health of the urinary system. This herb has been used to assist in the expulsion of kidney stones by enhancing urine flow and may also alleviate inflammation. However, it is important to note that usage should not exceed six weeks, as prolonged consumption can increase the risk of seizures, lower levels of B vitamins, and cause a loss of potassium.
