Quranic Verses on Integrity in Work
Allah – Exalted be He – exemplifies the quality of integrity in work through the story of Prophet Moses – peace be upon him – as indicated in the verse: (So he watered for them, then turned to the shade and said, ‘My Lord, indeed, I am in need of whatever good You would send down to me.’ Then one of them came to him walking with bashfulness. She said, ‘Indeed, my father calls you that he may reward you for having watered for us.’ And when he came to him and related the story, he said, ‘Do not fear; you have escaped from the wrongdoing people.’ One of them said, ‘O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy.’)
Quranic Verses on Trust in Documenting and Repaying Debts
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah – Exalted be He – guides His servants on the proper way to document contracts, points out that collateral is acceptable when writing is not feasible, and emphasizes the importance of honesty and not concealing testimonies. He states: (And if you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit should be given. And if one of you entrusts another, then let the one who is entrusted discharge his trust and let him fear Allah, his Lord. And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it—his heart is indeed sinful. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.)
Moreover, Allah – Exalted be He – praises the People of the Book who uphold trust and repay debts, while condemning those who fail to do so. He says in Surah An-Nisa: (And among the People of the Scripture are those who, if you entrust them with a pile of gold, will return it to you; but among them are those who, if you entrust them with a dinar, will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over them. That is because they say, ‘There is no blame upon us concerning the unlettered.’ And they speak untruth about Allah while they know.)
Quranic Verses Encouraging the Preservation and Fulfillment of Trusts
Allah – Exalted be He – frequently encourages the fulfillment of trusts, as follows:
- Allah – Exalted be He – commands the fulfillment of trusts and the exercise of justice: (Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.)
- Allah – Exalted be He – praises the believers and mentions some of their attributes, including the preservation of trusts: (And they who are to their trusts and their covenant are dutiful. And they who carefully maintain their prayer—It is they who will be in the gardens, honored.)
- Allah – Exalted be He – commends those who pray regularly in Surah Al-Ma’arij for their good deeds, including their adherence to trusts: (And they who are to their trusts and their covenant are dutiful. And they who fulfill their testimonies are steadfast. And they who carefully maintain their prayers—Those are in gardens, honored.)
Quranic Verses Warning Against Betraying Trusts
Allah – Exalted be He – warns the believers against the betrayal of trusts, stating in Surah Al-Anfal: (O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].)
Additionally, Allah – Exalted be He – explains that the commandments given to humanity regarding acts of worship and the avoidance of sins are a trust that they have accepted, highlighting the gravity of this matter: (Indeed, We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and feared it; but man undertook it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.)
