Rewards of Mosque Construction
In Islam, building mosques is viewed as a virtuous action that earns immense rewards from Allah – the Almighty. Allah – glory be to Him – praises those who engage in constructing mosques, as stated in the Quran: “Only those who believe in Allah populate the mosques of Allah.” The significance of maintaining and developing mosques is also highlighted in the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) teachings, where he proclaimed: “Whoever builds a mosque seeking Allah’s pleasure, Allah will build for him a similar house in Paradise.” The renowned Islamic scholar Al-Nawawi explained this hadith by emphasizing the greatness of mosque construction in two aspects: First, the reward for the builder by receiving a comparable abode in Paradise; and second, the excellence of the structures that Allah constructs for His servants compared to the houses in Paradise, which undoubtedly differ from earthly dwellings, as the bliss found therein is something no eye has witnessed, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine.
Moreover, the Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized the value of participating in mosque construction by saying: “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, even equivalent to the size of a quail’s nesting place, Allah will create for him a house in Paradise.” The hadith highlights the remarkable nature of such contributions, as the nesting place of the quail is far too small for prayer. Some scholars interpret this to imply that even the smallest contribution towards building a mosque grants the individual a share in its construction. In this context, the quail refers to a type of dove found in the surrounding areas.
Significance of Mosques in Islam
Mosques hold a prestigious status in Islam, being among the most beloved places on earth to Allah – the Most High. They serve as centers of worship, bases for military operations, and venues for educational gatherings. The importance of mosque construction in Islam is underscored by the fact that it was one of the first actions undertaken by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) upon his migration to Medina. Furthermore, Allah – the Almighty – has promised disgrace in this world and punishment in the hereafter for those who prevent the remembrance of Allah in mosques and contribute to their destruction.
The Prohibition of Excessive Decoration in Mosques
Islamic law advises against excessive ornamentation and embellishment in mosque construction, particularly when such adornments hinder the worshippers’ focus. The use of gold and silver in building mosques is similarly prohibited, as it is considered wasteful and extravagant.
