Beautiful Poetry about Friendship
Below are some of the most beautiful verses dedicated to friendship:
The Villager Poet:
There is nothing more delightful to my eyes
than the sight of friends and companions.
And there is no sweeter music to my ears
than the sound of the herald announcing the return of loved ones.
Al-Fath Al-Basiti:
I advise you to associate only with the virtuous,
whose noble character is a testament to their dignity and grace.
Do not rely on anyone other than the honorable, for
one such individual is better than a thousand others.
Abu Firas Al-Hamdani:
Since my existence began, I have been devoted to my companions;
the betrayal of friends is alien to my nature.
When a friend causes harm, I find pleasure in their mistakes
to highlight my own generosity and kindness.
If my friend does not often offend me,
where then is the space for my kindness and forgiveness?
He harms me, yet I remain ever gracious,
there is nothing better than a loyal companion beside me.
Adi ibn Zayd:
If you find yourself among people, choose to associate with the best of them,
and do not keep company with the poor in character, lest you also fall.
Speak with justice when you do speak; do not blame others,
and when you despise, let it be known, and when you praise, do not hold back.
Limit complaints to your friend only to true grievances;
extend your empathy as needed.
He also said:
My friend is not the one quick to abandon me;
he does not trade me for another friend when I am absent.
Rather, my true friend is the one who maintains our bond
and guards my secrets against all intruders.
Al-Mutanabbi:
I am a companion of a person’s essence before their form,
and I recognize them through their actions and words.
I am patient with my friend even when I know
that rewarding ignorance with patience leads to regret.
Ibn Al-Rumi:
Your enemy can be drawn from your friend,
so do not gather too many companions.
For the affliction often arises
from matters of food or drink.
When a friend turns into an enemy one day,
the shift is clear, and matters tend to revert.
If the multitude brings joy, it could lead
to mingling with wolves in sheep’s clothing.
Al-Buhturi:
If the actions of my friend cause me distress,
and they do not clarify their wrongs, I bear it patiently.
I endure certain behaviors that trouble me
for fear of remaining without a friend.
He also says:
How many friends I’ve recognized through their bonds,
who became dearer than an old companion.
And a companion I’ve traveled with in a journey
has turned out to be a better friend afterward.
Mahmoud Sami Al-Baroudi:
The true friend is not the one with high status,
but the one whose virtues shine bright.
If time’s adversities befall you, let not their resolve falter,
nor let worries diminish their means.
They cherish you in both distance and closeness,
and do not overlook your well-being, for it is precious.
Not like the one who feigns affection while beneath
boils the fire of hatred.
They criticize their brother’s actions, feigning sorrow
to mislead others into thinking they share in their suffering.
And that, in itself, is a masked enmity—be wary,
for know that God shall turn away from such treachery.
Imam Al-Shafi’i:
If the sweetness of friendship is not a natural state,
then there is no good in affection that is forced.
And there is no benefit in a friend who betrays his companion,
who meets him after affection with estrangement.
And he denies the bond that once flourished,
and reveals a secret that was hidden yesterday.
Peace be upon a world that lacks therein
a sincere friend, true to their word and just in their feelings.
Elia Abu Madi:
Oh my companion, your affection draws me near,
I feel as if we share a bond of kinship.
Our shared love matters more than the whole picture,
and the warmth of friendship surpasses mere appearances.
People read the ink on the pages,
but a brother reads your essence like blood.
So preserve the spirit, knowing it cannot return,
and do not hold back warmth after regret.
You will not change their essence,
unless the earth transforms into the heavens.
When your presence graces, do not unveil her secrets,
for the light obscures the shadows of despair.
Al-Nabigha Al-Dhubyani:
Keep your affection for your friends close; do not be
like a serpent biting at the heels of the supportive.
For gentleness leads to success, and patience brings happiness—
practice kindness and it will bring you triumph.
Despair over what has passed will yield comfort,
and with patience, a good meal can return to the table.
Abu Al-Ala Al-Ma’arri:
If you bind friendships in times of hardship,
do not forget loyalty in times of ease.
He who finds his brother in need of wealth
has not fulfilled the essence of brotherhood.
He who bestows generosity only upon his kin
knows not the true paths of liberality.
Poem: I Sacrifice for You, My Loyal Friend
Wrote by Abu Al-Fath Al-Basiti:
I sacrifice myself for you, my loyal friend,
for true companions have become scarce.
I have a desire that if you are faithful,
is there not a desire in you to fulfill this bond?
And I shall guard your trust as long as you are alive,
and shall not waver nor turn away.
Poem: Faithfulness of Promise is a Noble Trait
Wrote by Nasif Al-Yaziji:
Faithfulness to a promise is a noble trait,
and breaking it is a sign of the base.
For me, nothing counts among virtues
except treasuring goodwill and maintaining trust.
I am a loyal friend, and my commitment
to my friend is without limit.
I honor his rights as long as he lives,
and after his passing, I honor it with significance.
Poem: You have Always Been There When Dew United Us
There was always a loyal companion when the dew gathered,
a heartfelt gratitude filled my soul.
Today, deep within my heart,
I feel that what once was has become rare.
Do not think that friendship is merely a meeting
among lovers or a feast of abundance.
True friendship is born of deep affection,
like the heart to the lungs, pulsating in harmony.
I draw faith from its thresholds,
and my sustenance is with the grace of God and its wonders.
Oh, loyal friend, with gentleness,
the words have often failed to express my sentiments.
And the horse of poetry sometimes falters,
and perhaps falters in support as well.
Poem: Convey to Our Brother, May God Protect Him
Wrote by Ali ibn Al-Jahm:
Convey to our brother, may God preserve his companionship,
that even if I do not see him, he is always with me.
My gaze is connected to the look of him,
even if his resting place is far from mine.
God knows I do not forget him,
and how can I forget him when he is never absent from my thoughts?
Poem: I Have a Friend Through Time
Wrote by Abu Firas Al-Hamdani:
I have a friend in time who stands by me,
a companion in life’s trials and tribulations.
When my tears rise, if you only see me,
in the morning or the evening, he is remembered.
I mix my tears with my drink in a cup,
and sweeten the bitterness with fine jewels.
